Montessori Graduation
At Tír na nÓg our senior Montessori group recently graduated. This is a very important event in our school year as it helps the children with the transition from Montessori school to Primary school.
Every child receives a Graduation certificate, which of course does not include grades, but does outline the work the children have completed throughout the year. It also includes a comment about the child, which is really the important part of the certificate. Our ethos is to ‘Praise children at any opportunity’ and this is a great opportunity to praise!
I remember meeting the parents of a child who had graduated many years earlier, at a show in the Draíocht theatre in Blanchardstown, where the talented Emma was taking the starring role. Her mother said to me “Do you remember what you wrote on Emma’s Montessori graduation certificate?” and I did, I had said “We will see Emma’s name in lights someday, she is born to be on stage”. Her mother went on to tell me to this day, they keep the graduation certificate on the fridge and it inspires Emma to go after the roles she wants.
A good, positive start to a child’s education really does make a difference to how they progress through the education system, and I believe there is no better start than the particle and natural approach we take using the Montessori Method.
After 15 years of teaching Montessori we regularly have past pupils returning to visit us, some of whom are now in third level education, and they tell us of their successes and how it all began at Tír na nÓg.
