Having a curriculum in Early Childhood Education is simply a way of supporting your child’s play, therefore enabling your child to develop and become an independent person. At Tír na nÓg we do this through the Montessori programme, under the Aistear/Síolta National Framework.

Montessori

Montessori is a method of teaching that is based on self-directed, child led activities, hands on learning and collaborative play. Children make creative choices in their learning, while the classroom environment and the room leader offer age-appropriate learning experiences to guide the process. Respect the child is the core principle of the Montessori Method of Education. Children are free to move around the classroom and to independently choose their own activities.

Our Montessori specific materials increase sensory awareness and refinement of the senses and guide the child in their individual growth and development. These activities support development of concentration and dexterity. They indirectly prepare children for the more formal learning they will be introduced to in primary school, including number recognition and counting, understanding amounts, letters and reading, pencil control and writing, space and volume. Opportunities for self-correction are built into Montessori equipment, this develops confidence and self-assurance. Children feel good about themselves, their companions and the world around them.

Aistear

Aistear is the early childhood curriculum framework for all children in Ireland from birth to six years. Aistear equips teachers with information to help them plan for and provide enjoyable and challenging learning experiences. Aistear celebrates early childhood as a time of being and learning from experiences as they unfold. Aistear describes the types of learning (dispositions, values and attitudes, skills, knowledge and understanding) that are important for children in early years and offers ideas and suggestions as to how this learning can be nurtured.

The framework uses four themes:

  • Well-being
  • Identity and Belonging
  • Communicating
  • Exploring and Thinking
